Whittard Moscow Mule Tea Review

Whittard Moscow Mule Tea Review

Ginger beer is one of my favourite summertime drinks. Sweet, fiery, tasty and refreshing. It’s lovely poured over ice with a slice of lemon or used as a mixer in alcoholic drinks. Moscow Mule tea by Whittard of Chelsea promises all of that, with enhanced refreshing vibes.

I tried this tea blend numerous times before, both and iced, and it’s a real treat when you brew it right. It won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s certainly one of my favourites from Whittard’s herbal tea collection.

In my review below, find out what Moscow Mule tastes like, why it’s named as such, how best to brew it, and more!

Izzy's Rating
3.9/5
  • Blend: Candied ginger with apple, lemon, mint and herbal ingredients
  • Flavour: Soft ginger beer with notes of apple, herbs and mint

So refreshing! The ginger notes warm your mouth but are refreshing rather than cosy, thanks to the herbs. It’s the mint in the aftertaste that makes this tea amazing hot and cold.

3.9/5

The ginger is strong in this one! You can tell from the moment you open the packet that Whittard haven’t gone light on ginger notes. It’s fiery and tingly. But hidden under those tangy ginger spices is a gentler aroma. Notes of lemongrass, sweet apple juice, and mint brighten it overall. There’s also a hint of strawberry – possibly this is coming from the blackberry leaves.

It brews into a cloudy pale apple juice colour. This tea is quite dusty, so if you have a fine tea strainer I advise that you put it to use.

The aroma coming from the brewed tea (I’m reviewing it hot) is milder with the herb notes and stronger with the ginger. Steeping the candied ginger in boiling water draws out the sweetness more, so you really get a ginger beer note.

I could sip this tea all day. It has a thick, syrupy texture. The ginger is the first note, but it’s quickly met with lemony and minty hints that freshen it up. You start each sip with fiery ginger and end it with cooling menthol. Is quite unusual but I really like it!

How to Brew Moscow Mule Mint Tea

First of all, mix up the tea in the bag. The peppermint leaves sink to the bottom, so you need to make sure it’s completely combined before you dole out your leaf.

Use 4g of leaf per cup of water to make a hot tea. Let the infusion steep for 4 minutes, stirring occasionally, then strain and enjoy. I find it sweet enough without adding any sweetener.

If you want to drink this tea cold, you can pour the brewed hot tea over ice. You can also cold brew 8g of leaf per cup of water in the fridge for up to 12 hours.

Why Whittard of Chelsea?

Whittard is one of those quintessentially British tea brands. I love their English Breakfast and Earl Grey blends, but sometimes their more unusual herbal fruit teas are less enticing.

Thankfully, this one was delicious and quite versatile – Moscow Mule is great hot and cold.

The tea blend is inspired by the classic ginger beer cocktail, which I’ve never tried… but now I want to! Besides the candied ginger which includes sugar, all other ingredients in this tea are natural and unflavoured.

Ginger Beer Tea Health Benefits

Ginger has some great health benefits. The root of the ginger plant is linked to reducing nausea, which could make it effective for motion sickness, morning sickness, chemotherapy side effects, and other ailments according to Healthline.

If you’re really after the health benefits from tea, however, I probably wouldn’t recommend this one. Whittard Moscow Mule contains candied ginger as well as dried ginger. The sugary candied ginger accounts for 28% of the ingredients, so that’s quite a bit of sugar!

Summary

I highly recommend this tea as a summer treat when the weather gets hot and muggy. The ginger, citrus and mint combination is so refreshing yet also very flavourful. You should definitely check it out at Whittard before it’s taken out of the regular range!
