Apple goes so well with tea. A sweet apple flavour with green tea, or a sour fresh apple with black tea, both work amazingly well. Mlesna Apple tea falls into the latter category, featuring Ceylon black tea from Sri Lanka and apple flavouring.
This isn’t the first apple tea I’ve reviewed, nor is it the first Mlesna tea I’ve reviewed. To be perfectly honest, I’ve had some terrible teas from both, so the bar is quite low for this one!

What a disappointment! This tea severely lacks apple flavouring and the black tea base isn’t impressive either. I recommend you add a drop of apple squash/concentrate to this tea if you want that apple flavour.

When you open the packet, the apple aroma isn’t strong, but it is detectable. It seems quite sour as well as sweet, which is a good sign! Sickly sweet apple teas are rarely good flavour-wise or health-wise (a lot of sugar).
It brews slowly into a dark caramel brown tea liquor, but it’s still clear. I can see the bottom of my teacup easily. That’s a good indicator that this tea is best without milk.
Unfortunately, the apple has now completely vanished, and nothing will bring it back out again. From here, the aroma from the hot cup of tea is simply… plain. And the flavour is plain too.
There are no strong notes, no richness, no vibrancy, no maltiness. There isn’t even any bitterness. It’s just plain black tea. You might as well drink hot water instead and take a caffeine supplement. That will have the same effect as drinking Mlesna Apple tea!
How to Brew Mlesna Apple Tea
If you want to go ahead and try this tea even after my poor experience with it, you’ll want to follow these directions.
Use fresh water in your kettle. Once it’s boiling, pour it directly over the teabag in your cup. Let it steep for 4 to 5 minutes, then remove the teabag. Finally, add some flavour. A slice of lemon will brighten things up, or if you have any apple squash or cordial at home, try a slug of that instead.
Although it lacks flavour, Mlesna Apple tea doesn’t lack caffeine. If you’re sensitive to caffeine, don’t drink this one late in the evenings or you might struggle to sleep.
Why Mlesna Ceylon Tea Bags?
Mlesna sell this tea in bulk, or you might come across a selection box like I did. My Mlesna tea arrived in individually wrapped teabags, which is usually good for the flavour. Foil wrapping tends to prevent the teabags going stale more than paper packaging does.
But in this case, the tea is clearly lacking flavour to begin with.
When the tea is examined a little closer, you’ll see that there are no tell-tale white crystal lumps, which is what you often find in flavoured teas. Perhaps Mlesna forgot to add the apple flavouring?
As for the tea itself, the leaf particles are quite finally chopped but they aren’t dusty, at least.
Overall, the quality is poor and nothing to brag about. Mlesna really shouldn’t label their teas as “naturally the best”.

This tea isn’t for me. It’s just too plain. But if you want to check it yourself, go ahead! Mlesna are a bit behind the times, so it can be hard to track down this tea online. Check Amazon, first of all, using the button below to go straight there. Maybe you’ll be lucky!
