The London Tea Company Camomile Tea Review

Camomile is so good for soothing the mind and body at the end of the day. I’ve been reviewing a range of different camomiles over the past months and I’m quite into these single serving camomile tea bags because they’re so convenient. I do love using loose leaf (read my review of Whittard’s loose camomile) but in the middle of the night I just don’t have the patience to deal with it.

The London Tea Company Camomile tea is a budget priced tea with no fancy additional ingredients to make it more suitable for sleeping. You could always add some lavender or lime flower yourself to make it more complex. Really, it’s not needed though.

This is what I thought of The London Tea Company’s camomile infusion.

  • Type: Tagged paper tea bag
  • Ingredients: Camomile
  • Health Benefits: Soothe anxiety and insomnia
  • Flavour Notes: Warm, wet hay, sweet honey, musty
  • Aroma: Musty, warm, honey, oaty flapjacks
  • Milk or Lemon: Some honey if you have a particularly sweet tooth
  • Where to Buy: Amazon

The paper packet is quite flimsy so when I opened it to find very fresh and aromatic camomile, it was a bit of a surprise. The strength was similar to what I’d expect from a foil wrapped tea bag. It’s musty and warm with comforting honey notes typical of camomile. What stood out, however, was this oaty aroma too. Combined with the honey and all I can think about is flapjacks. Yum.

After brewing it, the aroma lost a little of that sweetness and turned to honeyed grassy hay. It had a hint of an herbaceous note too. It wasn’t unpleasant, but it wasn’t as great as the dry aroma.

The flavour is as you’d expect. A warm hay flavour, very relaxing and comforting. It has a honey type sweetness with a musty edge to it.

I’d say it’s about midway between the very light Whittard Camomile and syrupy golden Twinings camomile. Not too strong but definitely not a light flavour either.

I enjoyed it. No complaints here!

How to Brew This Camomile Infusion

Using freshly boiled water, brew this tea bag for approximately 3 minutes and 30 seconds. That gave it a really nice, warming brew. There were no instructions on the tea sachet or outer box, so it took a little guess work and practice to find the sweet spot.

It came out a clear golden yellow colour, without any tea dust clouding up the liquor. The smooth texture is very inviting in your mouth.

If you love insanely sweet things, you could add some honey but for me that would just be too much. Drinking camomile is fine on an empty stomach, late at night or whenever you fancy it. There’s great research showing how chamomile can reduce anxiety, so don’t be afraid to have a cup when you’re really feeling it.

Why The London Tea Company?

I quite like The London Tea Company as a basic brand to have in the cupboard. It’s a good idea if you have guests around frequently who want a cuppa but aren’t keen on your exotic tea collection. A few camomile tea bags on offer late at night could be a great relief.

The London Tea Company Camomile tea bags are Fairtrade certified and available in a range of box sizes. I have the 20 tea bag box, with individually wrapped tea bags. The contents are a little dusty and full of fine camomile flowers and probably stalks too. The finely chopped ingredients mean they infuse quicker than whole flowers but will also go stale quicker.

Summary

I enjoyed this tea and I’d certainly recommend it. A simple, one-ingredient tea doesn’t always guarantee that it will taste good. Things go wrong. Take my recent Ahmad Mint Mystique review for example, where the mint just wasn’t good.

This is a solid camomile tea you can rely on.

The London Tea Company Amazon selection is pretty good, so check out their camomile blend and more!
